Commemorative Air Force Presents America’s Tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen
SUN ‘n FUN hosts the CAF’s B-17 Flying Fortress and RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit
Lakeland, Fla. (March 9, 2016) – In cities across the U.S., vintage military aircraft rest quietly in museums where school children and tourists admire them, take their pictures and leave them behind closed doors at the end of each day. But at this year’s SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In & Expo, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) will blast aviation history out of the museum and into Florida as they roar into Lakeland April 5 – 10.
The CAF is bringing two unique assets to help tell the inspirational story of the Tuskegee Airmen, America’s first black military pilots and their support personnel. Texas Raiders, a fully restored B-17G Flying Fortress, will be appearing at SUN ‘n FUN along with the CAF Red Tail Squadron’s RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit, a mobile theater featuring an original film about the Tuskegee Airmen. This duo shares an important story that honors the history and legacy of these WWII aviators, and serves as an inspiration to current generations to RISE ABOVE obstacles in their own lives. The CAF Dixie Wing’s P-51 Mustang Red Nose will also be on site with the RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit for view on static display April 5-8.
Visitors are invited to tour the cockpit of the Flying Fortress and step inside a world of living history. Admission for this special appearance is $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12 and $20 for a family of up to five members. Standard admission rates to SUN ‘n FUN will apply.
Entrance is free to the RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit 53’ mobile panoramic theater. All ages are welcome to enjoy this immersive and exciting experience to learn about the Tuskegee Airmen.
Special Opportunity for Veteran Aircrew!
In addition, all aircrew from the WWII, Korea and Viet Nam eras are invited to attend a special event on Wednesday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m. Come see the Flying Fortress take to the air AND meet today’s crews alongside yesterday’s heroes! The CAF will host a meet-and-greet with original Tuskegee Airmen, and will share with guests how the unique relationship between the bombers and the Tuskegee Airmen ensured the success of critical bombing missions. Veterans are invited to gather for a special photo commemorating their success. About the CAF B-17 Texas Raiders
By the end of World War II the United States and her allies had deployed the largest air armada the world had ever seen, and 12,731 US – made B-17 bombers had joined those forces in combat.
Today, only a handful of the iconic bombers still fly. Texas Raiders is owned by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF), a non-profit educational association headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The mission of the Commemorative Air Force is education, such that generations of Americans will value and support the contributions of military aviation in assuring our nation’s freedom. Texas Raiders was delivered to the US Army Air Force in July of 1945 and has been in service with the CAF since 1967. Fondly nick-named “TR” by her crew, the Flying Fortress now resides at Hooks Airport in Spring, Texas where maintenance, restoration and operations are conducted by a dedicated and wholly volunteer crew, the Gulf Coast Wing of the CAF. Join TR on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/B-17TexasRaiders and follow us on Twitter @B17TexasRaiders.
