Embry-Riddle Wins Top Prize at 2014 International RoboBoat Competition
Robotics students from Embry-Riddle are on their way home this week from a first-place overall victory at the 2014 International RoboBoat Competition, held July 8-13 in Virginia Beach, Va. Embry-Riddle students also took second place in the Design Competition category.

Last year’s winner, the University of Florida, came in second; the University of Central Florida was third; and the Georgia Institute of Technology took fourth.

The 13-team competition was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, Teledyne Marine Systems and other industry partners.

“Although the field was international, it is interesting to note that the top three teams are all from Florida for the second consecutive year,” said Dr. Charles Reinholtz, Mechanical Engineering Department chairman. “Florida has become a hotbed for competitive collegiate robotics, and there is clearly a healthy in-state rivalry helping to drive the teams.”

Next up, robotics teams will compete in the International RoboSub Competition July 28 to Aug. 3 in San Diego, Calif.; the International Aerial Robotics Competition Aug. 1-7 in Atlanta, Ga.; and finally, October’s Maritime RoboX Challenge in Singapore, for a $100,000 grand prize.

About the International RoboBoat Competition

The International RoboBoat Competition was first held in 2008. During the competition, student teams race autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) of their own design through an aquatic obstacle course. This includes littoral area navigation, channel following and autonomous docking.  [ home ]
