Storm Does Damage at Sun 'n Fun; No Serious Injuries Reported
Right at noon on Thursday, March 31, a serious thunderstorm and tornado visited the Lakeland, Florida campus of the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In.
Exhibitors' tents and displays were blown down and away; airplanes were ripped from their tiedowns, flipped over, and cast into each other. Property and dreams were destroyed, but reports of injuries were limited to seven reported rides to the hospital; none, according to local media, was for a serious condition.
Early reports of a destroyed building turned out to be false. Some portable lavatories, however, were blown over. (According to local officials, all were unoccupied at the time.)
City and county crews and hordes of volunteers were set to begin cleanup late Thursday. The show should go on through Sunday, as planned.
